Frequently asked questions

  • How do I back up my data?

Open Settings → Data → Back up. Holdary writes a snapshot of your accounts, snapshots, holdings, and notes to your iCloud Drive (Holdary container). Backups happen on demand; we do not auto-back-up in v1.

  • How do I restore from a backup?

Open Settings → Data → Restore from backup, then pick the backup file from your iCloud Drive. Holdary fully replaces the on-device database with the backup contents — make a fresh backup first if you want to keep the current state.

  • Which markets and currencies are supported?

Holdary supports tickers across the US, Taiwan (TWSE), Hong Kong, Japan, and most major exchanges within our market-data coverage, plus quotes for major cryptocurrencies. Currencies follow ISO 4217; live exchange rates are pulled at refresh time. If a ticker isn't recognized, you can still log it as a manual holding (see next question).

  • Can I add a custom holding that isn't on a public exchange?

Yes. When adding a holding, leave the ticker blank and enter the holding name plus an average cost. The holding will display its cost basis only — live market price will be unavailable. You can update the price manually any time by editing the holding.

  • How do I track funds? Do they update automatically?

Funds don't have a “create holding” flow yet, so track them by recording the value manually: enter the fund account's current total value and update it when the value changes. Automatic fund price updates and creating fund positions directly are on our roadmap for a future update.

  • How do I track margin (融資) positions?

Split it into two parts: keep the shares in an investment account, where they auto-update if they have a ticker, and record the borrowed amount in a separate “Margin loan” liability account. Your net worth is then automatically “holdings value − margin loan,” with the asset side updating on its own — you only adjust the loan when you trade or interest accrues. Native support for attaching margin ratio and interest to individual positions is on our roadmap for a future update.

  • How do I track short positions (融券)?

Short positions aren't modeled natively yet (holdings are long-only). For now, record the position's current net equity (collateral + deposit − buy-back cost) as a single balance and update it as needed. Native support for short positions is on our roadmap for a future update.

  • Where is my financial data stored?

Entirely on your device, using Apple's SwiftData (a local SQLite database). Optional backups go to your own iCloud Drive. Our backend never sees your account names, balances, or holdings — it only proxies anonymous market price and currency lookups.
